The Wonder of Wonder

We had a great meeting to discuss the amazing book "Wonder."  There was so much to discuss in the book and the conversation ranged from:
What in the book made us happy?
What made us sad?
Our favorite characters?

The girls all rated the book a 9 on a scale of 1-10.  With one girl even giving it a 9.5!

We ended our discussion by sharing precepts just like Mr. Browne did in his class.

Here are a few....
You are a good person if you try your best.
Be kind because everyone you meet is fighting a battle.
Love can cover a multitude of sins.
Smile; make people wonder what you are smiling about. :)
Just because something bad happens doesn't mean something good won't.
Don't worry about tomorrow, today is something special.
Just because something is true doesn't mean you need to say it.
Be joyful even though you have considered all the alternatives.
Forgiveness frees the soul.
Everyone should be accepted---no matter what!
And one that we discussed....

One day I hope to be as good of person as my dog thinks I am!

Making our "Choose Kind" frames.

Next meeting is March 16th, 1:30, hosted by Ashley and Angela.  The book is "Ungifted."

Email from Polly Horvath

We received an email from Polly Horvath, the author of "Everything on a Waffle."

Hi Cheryl

Thanks for such a kind letter.  You all should do the sequel next - One Year in Coal Harbor.  I think mother daughter book clubs are such a great idea!

Best,
Polly

Next Meeting....The Candymakers

At our next meeting we will be discussing "The Candymakers."

Picture from our meeting and discussion.

Everything on a Waffle

Our last book before the summer break was "Everything on a Waffle" by Polly Horvath.  We really enjoyed the book and getting to "know" the main character, Primrose.  The book has a local restaurant in it called "The Girl on the Red Swing."  This local restaurant is different than most because everything is served on top of a waffle. The owner of the restaurant teaches Primrose how to cook and throughout the novel, there were recipes at the end of each chapter. The recipes are fun and we loved reading about Primrose’s journey throughout the novel.  For our meeting, we had a real treat because Angela and Ashley brought their own family recipe for waffles.  They were delicious!

We loved the book, all of the recipes, and the waffles.

Fun Discussion of Fern Verdant

We had a great meeting on April 21st.  We discussed "Fern Verdant and the Silver Rose."  Angela gave the party planning credit to Ashley and I must say, Ashley did an amazing job!  We went through some very thought provoking questions, played an awesome "How well do you know your mother/daughter" game, the girls made beautiful cards for the moms and lastly we all left with a beautiful silver rose.  It was a great  day!  Thanks so much Angela and Ashley....Lily and Fern would have been proud!

Over the next few weeks we will be reading “Everything on a Waffle” written by Polly Horvath.  The book was critically acclaimed and won a variety of awards, including the 2002 Newbery Honor so it should be very good.  Our next meeting will be on Sunday, June 2nd.
